When beginning your career, your ideal position may seem like a distant daydream — but it doesn’t have to be. With enough dedication, commitment, passion and hard work, you could find yourself landing the job you’ve always dreamed of (or never knew you always wanted). As the old saying goes, nothing worth having comes without effort. Perisistence is a key ingredient for success in any career, especially for those with long lists of highly qualified applicants. We’ve compiled three simple ways to help send you on the path toward landing your dream career.
1. Discover What You Want
Before dedicating your life to pursuing a specific line of work, look inside and ask yourself if you can realistically see yourself in that career. It’s easy to get caught up in an idealized version of your dream job without fully understanding the realities of what it entails. For example, many young girls dream of being fashion designers, yet have little interest in sewing or sketching outfits. While the idea of being a fashion designer may sound glamorous, ask yourself if you think you will truly enjoy the nitty gritty work that comes with the fancy job title. Test drive your dream job before committing. Take a part time job or internship in your desired industry to get a feel for the profession before diving in.
2. Be Persistent
Once you’ve set your sights on your dream career, don’t let a lack of experience or industry know-how discourage you. As your grandma always said, every expert started out as a beginner. You have to be ready and willing to start from the bottom and slowly climb up the ranks until you’ve achieved your ultimate goal. Don’t let a failure or two or even twenty deter your resolve to land your dream job. Learn from your failures and perservere. Nobody at the top of their trade got there without an immense amount of persistence, effort and dedication.
3. Start Now
It’s never too early to start chasing your dream. It takes many people years to find their passions, and even then, just as many don’t have the courage or fortitude to pursue them. Get a head start by finding even the smallest way to start working toward your dream job. What seems inconsequential now may turn out to be the turning point in what will become a long and prosperous career. That part time internship you did while you were a sophomore in college could lead you to a networking opportunity that helps you break into the industry. Even if internships and volunteer opportunities don’t lead to employment, they add to your resume and your catalog of experiences, which will serve you well as you continue to fight your way closer to your end goal. Appreciate and collect small successes, and in time, you’ll find they lead to something much greater.
