SLE offers a wide variety of services, including event planning, marketing, public relations, graphic design, ticketing, fashion and entertainment booking, management and production. Today, the SLE PR Fam is offering some helpful tips for jumpstarting your career in public relations.

  1. Know what you like

In public relations, there are several different paths you can take whether you’re interested in working with nonprofit organizations, in an agency environment, in the entertainment field and so on and so forth. As a public relations major, being asked “what do you want to do with your degree” is almost a rite of passage. The options are endless: you can work for a corporation, in media relations, social media, community relations, government and so much more. The great thing about PR is that it’s a versatile career that allows you to dip into almost any industry. Thus, our first tip is to figure out what you like. Are you into politics? Do you have a knack for social media? Do you keep up with the latest music and movies? Determine what makes you happy and where your passions lay, and you’ve already taken your first step toward furthering your career in PR. Focus on what you love. You’ll thank yourself later.

  1. Develop a blog

Regardless of what emphasis you decide on, in public relations, you will write, and you will write all the time. The best way to get those creative juices flowing before you even begin your career, is to start your own blog. Trust us, thinking of topics on the spot can be a challenging undertaking; however, if you start up your own blog and get into the habit of writing all the time, inspiration will come much easier. Plus, your writing skills will drastically improve thanks to the extra hours of practice.

  1. Complete an internship (or several)

If you’re a current college student, you’ve probably had the importance of internships hammered into your brain upwards of a hundred times. However, we cannot emphasize how crucial internships truly are for securing post grad employment. One of the most helpful things you can do to help kickstart your career is to collect as much experience as possible, regardless of which industry you pursue. An internship affords you insight into what a career in your selected field will actually be like. Any college class can tell you what it’s like to work in PR, however, gaining experience in a company that performs public relations services before graduation will provide first-hand experience. Internships are also helpful for networking and building relationships with mentors. Plus, you never know when an internship can turn into full-time employment.

Start building your PR career today by applying for an internship at SLE. We’re always looking for passionate and enthusiastic new talent to join the #SLEFam. To apply, please visit
